Hutchinson, KS (pop. 42,000), also known by locals as “Hutch” was founded in 1871, when Indian Agent Clinton “C.C.” Hutchinson contracted with the Santa Fe Railway to make a town at the railroad’s crossing over the Arkansas River. The community was known to be called “Temperance City”. Hutchinson was incorporated on August 15, 1872.
Located on the Arkansas River, it has been home to salt mines since 1887, thus its other nickname is “Salt City”.
On June 21, 2013 (yes, just last month), Hutchinson was officially proclaimed as Smallville, Kansas, the Home of Clark Kent (Superman).
