Denver (pop. 618,000) is nicknamed the Mile-High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile (5,280 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest major cities in the United States. Denver was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas Territory.
Denver currently has 80 neighborhoods, which range in character from one to another and includes everything from large skyscrapers to houses from around the start of the 20th century to modern, suburban style developments. The lower Downtown area (LODO)–where my nephews live–is a fun, swanky neighborhood. I’d recommend a visit there.
